Real Excel advice for professionals
Tips, tips, everyone is bombarded with ‘tips’, havin tip after tip does nothing but clutter your brain
what you’ll get with me is excel advice and career advice. My excel skills played a massive role in getting me to a 6f salary
I don’t bother with Tables, they can be good, but I just don’t
Sparklines look pretty but if you’re a professional like an accountant/pmo , analyst, you don’t need it, it’s overkill
Why overly pretty outputs make you look pretty sill (senior people who are concerned about business problems don’t care about your pretty charts, if they do, they will get fired at some point because they possess a personality that doesn’t lend itself to leadership i.e. they’re worried about the wrong things…good leaders need the rigth amount…of coruse, it needs to be neat but most importantly it needs to be useful..i’ll talk more about usefulness (s.o.s…create a narrative with your report, understand your audience and create for them…this is a big problem when somone comes along and just wants to show off their excel skills…guess what it’s like asking a harlem globetrotter to join the la lakers…sure they’ll do some fancy moves but when it comes to playing the game, they’ll be ouyt of their depth…you’ll look like all style and no substance
I don’t teach everything, in fact I spend a great deal of time teaching you what to avoid! If you want to become a genius at every aspect of excel , I’m not your guy. If you want to learn the right things in excel to cruch your professional career, go far and get a much bigger salary in the process. I’m your guy.
charts, you don’t all the charts. When I see someone’s workbook with all inds of bubble, donut, surface blah blah, I cringe, I cringe hard like someone’s kicked me where the sun doesn’t shine. You know why because this person has comitted a few crimes and it’s often managmeent consutlants who will be guilty. the crimes are 1.you are not able to articulate something in simple terms so you are using a fairly complicated chart. 2. you are violating the no.1 law of being a good professional ‘dumb things down for people’, even for other professionals. Some people don’t want to dumb things down because they hate anyone who doesn’t get it, sadly those people don’t ‘get it’, other people won’t dumb things down because it makes them look smart, well they’re not playing the game, so they are anything but smart, they’re what i call ‘nostalgia smart’: Nostalgia smart are people who go A’s in school, did will at university, intellectual top dogs, their self worth is wrapped largely in the persona and reputation they have crafted over many years of being smart, they must leave the smartest facebook comemnts, they will engage in debates and discussions with others to prove their intelligence. Those are heavily deluded people, they are playing the wrong game, they are squandering their intelligene, it’s like a professional footballer who injured themselves showing off 9it’s ahppened), it’s a waste. If you don’t dumb things down, you are lacking empathy and self awareness and it will make you look like a smartas or leaders will dismiss you as someone who doesn’t get it. of course i can say this as someone who was the master of bubble donut plum monkey micro graphs, what did it get me a very dismissive ‘that’s nice son’ which is why i hate it when excel ‘experts’ tell you what you need to be a dashboard master…you don’t…In the course, i’ll keep you form preventing such mistakes and telly ou what it is you actually should be focused on…remember kids, Excel ‘tips’ are dangerous. Excel advice should come wrapped i useful career’business context , so it has a purpose

Pretty Excel Charts and pretty silly
I was 28 years old and working in Banking Operations at the Royal bank of Scotland, one of the biggest Banks in the world. We had some executives coming from the US and they wanted to discuss the progress of projects my team was on. This was my time to shine so I told my manager, let me pull something together, so I spent a week, mostly in my spare time on creating a Dashboard. I wanted this to be the baddest mo fo of a dashboard ever seen, I reasearched and foun a way to do some microcharts (sparklines), some dynamic moving graphics and more functionality. I mean this thing was bonafide bada$$, I was happy and the boss didn’t have much time to review it. Now eventually, when our US execs came in, I managed to get 15 minutes of their time and when i first showed them, I’ll never forget the reaction of the most senior of them. He smiled in amusement. He looked at it and smiled in amusement, he said okay, thanks then changed the topic. I felt like the time I was 7 years old and told Samantha Jackson, I loved her and wanted to marry her, she laughed and then told the whole classs wo proceeded to laugh at me. So what went wrong? Ultimately it comes down to this : senior people who are concerned about business problems don’t care about your pretty charts, if they do, they will get fired at some point because they possess a personality that doesn’t lend itself to leadership i.e. they’re worried about the wrong things…good leaders need the rigth amount of information to help make good decisions, they care about not being distracted from making the wrong decisions. Make your charts neat but NOT fancy, they need to be useful. That particular executive laughed because he’s trying to run a business, he exepcts people around him to get that and support his ability to do that. So when I rocked up with a jackson Pollock of a chart, i just looked like a child trying to impress the big kids, I looked amateur and in that split second the executive lost all respect for me. Some people, some Excel ‘experts’ will say, there’s nothign wrong with making your charts a little fancy. Don’t listen to them, they don’t work in the real world. In the real world, you need to give the impression that the work you do adds value, not wastes time. In a corporate environmnet, you will NEVER go wrong with simple, basic Dashboards and reports. All things being equal the winner is
one of the most annoying phrases we use in our lives is ‘all things being equal’. Case in point, someone was debating me recently on my stance on MBA’s and certifications and he said that phrase, all things being equal, the person with the better education will get the job. This person is a few years younger than me and has not hired before. My position onMBAs has bchanged since i recorded that first video. First of all, the education in an MBA is generic, it simply won’t help you directly and barely indirectly. There simply is no substitute for being in an organisation, understanding it’s probelms nad helping senior people out. When you do an MBA you are doing it for you, That is extremely bad choice,. The way I teach people to sell themselves is all about other people, its about empathy, when you do an MBa, you’re saying look at me for the wrong reasons, you want to say ‘look at me ‘ for the right reasons, that is as a problem solver. The way you do that is to go in to organisations and solve problems, get results, …that’s what senior execs care about, that’s what keeps them up, not whether their next hire has an mBA…there is an interesting things ahppening in the uK since university fees were raised, some major organisations are beginiing to acceptpeople with no degrees for internships and apprenticehips…I worked with siuch people and they are bright and getting recognised…/secondly, i cannot stad anly longer people who say they are doing the deree to open up doors. I really cannot stand that reason, it makes me agnry, because you are essentially saying I am going to throw money at the problem, you are not getting to the root of the organisations. and you are robbing yourself of the opportunity to devlop relationship buidling skills, that will hurt you. you can’t hide behind that. what will you do when you get the MBA and none of your doors open for you, because it happens a lot? are you going to throw more money…..need another one called what is education? and why universities and scools provide the worst education

A look in to my life, how I spend. Everything is average and below, I’m not money obsessed. I’m obsessed only by self improvement. Part of that is to live below your means, for one you will be satisfied easier (doberman dan youtube vid). Also, more importantly when you want to make some moves in life, you want to take some risk, if you are plagued with questions about your next bit of income then you will remain in the same place. Most importantly, when you have a cushion financially, then you have a very different psychology. It’s why I tell people NEVER ever apply for jobs when you need them, don’t dig the well when you are thirsty. apply for roles when you don’t need them, you will manouvre with an air f confidence, you will have zero desperation and frankly you will be an attractive prospect. I do this always. It makes all the difference…living below your means is a big part of that. I simply DO NOT care what anyone thinkgs of me, you don’t like me? that’s your problem, i’m getting on with things and that goes with spending your money on fast cars or wahtever toys. Your consumptuion habits will hurt you in many ways

Powerpivot…The job of a company is to add lots of features to their software and make it more competitive….just because a feature is there it doesn’t mean you use it…It took me years to lean what you do need and what you don’t need if you’re an analytical professional controller etc and I teach that in the course…
The NOT learn part is so important because it quickly gets you to the doing part rather than the learning part…In life your learning is infinite and it doesn t end…In excel it absolutely ends. .that’s that she point of my book it boils things down to 27 formulas 10 of which are very imprint and 2 are super crucial

The RIGHT Excel skills are like an appreciating asset, they will provide you value for years and years, even if you get to senior ranks. When you are senior you will have junior and mid level employees to do most of the Excel monkeying for you.
But, there will be many instances where you can’t delegate tasks:
1. You can’t because the information/data is too sensitive
2. It’s actually far quicker to do it yourself rathe than to explain it
3. You want to automate something, save time and use that time for your own evil purposes!
Now recall my sentence ‘if you get to senior ranks’, well, that ‘if’ becomes a ‘when’ under my guidance
It starts with getting your Excel skills in order, then when you are doing that, I will show you how to start becoming senior, command respect and of course earn salary.

Why Googling hurts your Excel development
Last week I got the following Voicemail from my mother
‘Sohail, come quickly, I think I have got cancer….’
What…The…
I immediately, rang my mother asking what’s going.
Well, turns out she had a few symptoms, she decided to google it and being in her late 50’s, she put two and two and got five, then she concluded that she might have cancer.
She didn’t have cancer.
She had an upset stomach, heart burn and a few things that just happened together.
Nice mum. Nice.
Three of my closest friends are doctors and they are constantly telling me that the worst thing to happen to the medical profession is of course Google.
Google of course is wonderful, but people fail to see the major fallacy of google. People end up wasting far too much time on Google, going down endless rabbit holes of information they are chasing. It ends in time that you won’t get back, that’s all it does.
When it comes to Exce, google is no different. Of course, you can google anything on the subject of Excel BUT this isa very tactical way to work. People think they are saving money by googling but they are not, it is costing them something much more than money. Its costing them time.
When you invest in a good coruse in Excel it will give you some structured learning and improe your ability increase your understanding on how best to use Excel.
I always tell my students, by all means use Excel and then your googling will be quick and efficient. It will be focused.
Now, it may shock you to learn that even the King Kong of Excel, yours trul still uses google when it comes to Excel! What?! How can this be?! Why would I teach people to learn Excel but use Google myself?
I’ll explain.
I can do everything I need to in Excel. Everything and I teach people do that too.
But.
I Sometimes, I know it will take 15-20 mins to do some VBA or write a complex formula, I will rather quickly google it and tweak it and the sum total of that is 5 mins, so I have saved myself 10-15 mins. Whcich is valuable.
I can do that because I put the time in and got the right Excel skills.
People who don’t put that initial investment and learn Excel in a structured way, will spend a lot longer and they will do so every time. Think of all those minutes wasted, those minutes over a career add up to hours, days, weeks and months.
That is a poor way of thinking. It’s a cost mindset ‘why should I pay for a course, when I can learn for free online?’ I hear from these people.
They are the same people googling month after month, year after year, not getting any better, still wasting the same amount of time, wasting the small window of opprotnity on advancing their career, earning the same salary, working at the same junior/mid level.
They are people who will drive an extra 30 mins to save £5 on grocery shopping.
They don’t value time, time is the most important commodity, it’s the only you have you won’t get back. Why would you waste it?
Why? It doesn’t make sense to me.
If that’s you, then I want you to shift your thinking immediately. Right this second damit!
Shift it to an investment mindset.
Learning the right Excel skills in a structured manner will be an appreciating asset for you, they will pay off for years and years., they will make you get things done quicker, so you have more time.
More of the most important commodity
Invest in yur skills and ge a structured approach to learning Excel.
Now the question begs, whee can I learn. Well if you are not a professional, then there are many courses to find. But if you are a professional, then NOTHING else even comes close to my course. NOTHING.

I’ve talked about productivity a lot. Excel is a productivity tool as categorised by Microsoft. But I’m goijng to share with you right now, the most important aspect of productivity I practice the older I get, in one word
Subtration
Subtracting things from life is the most important thing you can do.
Look at all your pririties, be absolutely brutal with whqa’ts important , rop out the one’s that are not important
Now, this is what I did with the Excel book. Excel has well over 350 formulas and I ripped out over 300 of them and said, here you , these 27 formulas are all you need 80-90% of the time.

The other 10-20% just don’t matter, they are too low priority to waste time learningthings you only need for a small fraction of your efforts.
Now my formula for productivity and success as a junior to mid level professional became this:

That got me very very far.
I haad mentors to help me subtract, then I used my advanced Excel skills to automate and save time.
So I had lots of time, then I would focus on developing myself in other ways more important to being a professional, like I learned project management, and now I am a senior project management professional in investment banking.
It doesn’t pay too badly.

“in a former life, I was a national level athlete. Now if you google it you won’t find much because that was well over 15 years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth and the words ‘face’ and ‘book’ would never be found in the same sentence.
Anyways, I was ‘aight’ , nothing special at the national level but evenutally i stopped competing because life and work took different directions plus my event was not the sexy 100m but the very unsexy ‘shot put’, so it weren’t going to pay the bills. I needed a new plan. I got there in the end.

One thing I do to this day is train. I train heavy and hard. I lift weights, I sprint, do some easy cardio, some yoga like flexibility work and I do it often.
I am lucky that I fell in love with training, it happened at an early age, when I was 13 i began doing martial arts, running, pressups etc and seeing my body becoming stronger and fitter was an increbile experience and when I started lifting weights at 16, my development went to another level. I taught myself something very valuable. You have the pwoer to change your body, your mind, your situation. The older you get, the more negative talk whether it’s other people’s or your own bad experiences from realtionships in your life will keep you down. But having experienced so many self empowering moments in my life from becoming stronger. So many emails i get i get start with ‘should I’ or ‘do you think I shoul..’ which is fine, i get it, people want guidance, but you need to make sure you are going to do something with this. If it’s Excel skills, NOTHING empowers you better in that way then my course.”

Instead of writing 100,000 words on why I love Hip Hop, today, i’m gonna give you a quick lyric from one of the greatest, Jay-Z. it’s a line from ‘Diamonds from Sierra Leone’, one he did with another genius Kanye West(and if you think Kanye isn’t a genius let me know and I’ll tell you why you’re beyond mistaken).

I still get chills when I hear or rea those 8 words because they are so pwoerful.
What Jay is saying here is that he’s not jsut a businessman with his music, entertainment, fashion, sports management etc but those companies are extensions of him.People want to do business with Jay-Z, people trust ay-Z, if it’s got his name attached to it, it will do well.
In my career book, I wrote that every person in the corporate world needs to operate like a business, the ‘You’ business. You need to have a reputation as a go to person. 4 times in my career, I have had very senior executives create jobs for me, when they were discussing these roles in the budget planning with other senior execs, they would say ‘we need a Sohail type of person to do this’. THat’s branding my friend. Be known for something, your reputationwill proceed you. And let it evolve. I used to be the ‘Excel’ guy when I was younger because well, ‘i know a thing or two about Excel’ then i became the ‘Get project’s delivered guy’, now I’m the ‘leave it with me, it’s as good as done’ guy. reputation and branding gives confidence to senior decison makers, the same way Jay gives confidence to other execs who want to do business with him or cinsumers who want to buy his products. Analysts, accountatns, controllers, PMOs etc. You all need to at some point be ‘the Excel guy/girl’. speaking of music, I sound like a broken record, but register for my course at this link and get the right Excel skills from someone who knows what he’s doing.”

First of all, Hlookup is a stupid formula. don’t use it. if you use it or are considering using it, then you have a lot to learn. Mainly basics about manaign your data. EVERYONE wheterh analyst, accountant,, controler pmo blah blah needs to follow the same rule s when managing data…all covered in my course. Hlookup ends up in sheets which combine storing data plus givnig an output, sheets shouldn’t have a dual purpose like that, its inefficient unless its jsut a quick one off analysis or chart for some ad hoc request…
You see there are Excel skills and there are the correct ways professionals should be using Excel to make life a lot easier…both of which i cover in my course
okay how about some bonus advice Ravikumar…are you ready…pay attention…this will change your life in great ways…
Don’t call me ‘sir’, don’t start sentences off with ‘sir’. i get it it’s an indian culture respect thing. but it ain’t doing you favours when you communiate in the global world…The british empire lost it’s stranglehold over india decades ago so there’s no more evil british (i’m british btw) officers who need to be addressed with ‘sir’ anymore. When you call people ‘sir’ you put them on a pedestal, they can only look down at you. Talk to people the way you want them to talk to you. End your subservience. Now. And project confidence, you’ll get better jobs, more respect, more money and more blah blah blah

“I had some interesting responses after telliing off Ravikumar for ‘yes sir, no sire , 3 bags full of formulas sir. The most interesting one came from a nigerian lady, called Funmi. I love Nigerians btw, i grew up with lots of them in London, they combine being respectful, hard working and badasses as well as they do, they take investing in themselves v.seriosuly, i know, many of my students are Nigerians…Anyways, Funmi asked me this ‘Are you real? You say you’re an Executive but you use strange words, some colourful language (I don’t care for bad laungauge), is this how you talk at work?….I laughed for many microseconds and wrote back, here’s my response to Funmi.
Funmi, you may baulk and ‘not care’ for some of my language and writing style but nknow this, I’m a senior exec in banking, this is how i talk, in meetings. I’m a fun dude, opiniated but fun, this is how i talk and other execs love being in meetings with me because i lighten the atmosphere and keep thigns from getting boring. Now here’s the big but…i am never disruptive, i don’t make a joke for the sake of being funny, I never take the meeting away from the agenda UNLESS it gets heated in which case if i feel the need to diffuse, i will diffuse. Do some Maths for me Funmeee…We spend 8-10 hours a day at work, that’s a huuuge chunk of your time and your life and that of othe people, you need to make it bearable, for you and for others. Try it, people want to be around you, execs want to be around you. Now go and register for my course if your Excel abilities are less than stellar because pleasant to be around + good value adding skills like Excel will get you very very very far…and then have some Fun on me, Funmi.

I just quit my job!
Last Friday, I took my boss to one side and broke the bad news to him ‘Sorry tt, I’m moving on’
After, I eventually persuaded him to stop crying, he asked me which company I was moving to. Good question. Here’s the scoop, I’m not moving to another company!
Before you ask, no, I’m not going to India to ‘find myself’ on some spiritual journey. All is well with your ol’ buddy Sohail. So, what drove me to it? Brexit? Trump? ‘La La Land’ being incorrectly announced as Best Film at the Oscars?!
Neither of them. The answer is:
‘You’
I will be focusing on you, my students, my subscribers and am aiming to help 10,000 professionals master Excel, increase their salaries and get meaningful career progression.
You see, last year, despite doing a demanding senior Project Management role in a big Investment Bank, I still managed to successfully teach hundreds of people Excel with my online courses and keep up my career coaching efforts (in my spare time).
So much so, that due to even increased demand the only logical next step is to go full time. Here’s the thing, going full time is a mighty BIG risk. At 37 years old, I’m not exactly a young graduate anymore, I have responsibilities, I have kids, a wife and a fried chicken habit to feed. Of course, I have worked hard to give myself multiple sources of income and now I am cutting off my biggest source of income.
But, the nagging feeling in the back of my mind is, if I don’t take a risk on myself, why should YOU take a risk on me.
I moved ahead in life by leading the way and so I’m leading by taking a risk, will it work? Will I succeed in my goal of helping 10,000 professional? Or will I be emailing tt in two months begging for my job back!?
Time will tell but if I’m being honest, it’s not as big a risk as you might think simply because over the course of my career, I have worked in 10 companies in 10 years, I got 23 job offers, 18 of them over £100K in salary. I’m not telling you that to show off, I’m telling you so you know that career progression is not an outcome, but when you apply the right skills and mindset then career progression it becomes a PREDICTABLE bi-product.
So, if I decide in a year that I want to find a senior position in a reputable organisation, I know exactly how to do that.
